He was there for someone getting a prize, not as part of the season-concluding senior prizegiving awards. Thompson had not met Nganeko during her time with Greymouth Star until he attended the event, but said she learnt that he was a strong club supporter. about eleven o'clock. Nganeko was on the sidewalk with friends when Thompson went to him at 20:00 on March 30. Tataha then hit Nganeko in the chin with his right hand and Thompson followed it up with another punch. Ms. Murdoch, for her part, did not say how the information had emerged. He then walked back and headbutted Nganeko while he was on the footpath. Mr Nganeko was taken to Auckland City Hospital became he died three days later of his injuries.
Thompson was initially charged with common assault but this was later upgraded to manslaughter after Nganeko died from his injuries. Thompson made an appearance before the judge Tuesday morning and pleaded to his charge of manslaughter. He will be sentenced October 7, 2025.
When that bubble burst, Nganeko's family and friends answered the call and formed the Coward Punch Movement to lobby for tougher penalties. It is an attempt to educate the general public and petition for action in order to stop (or allow) this type of abuse of these defenseless creatures. One-punch assault causing serious bodily harm, charge of 'lethal', it has been charged as a specific culpable homicide but maximum penalty is life in prison. The Government has introduced new legislation to provide greater certainty for victims and the general public. Justice minister Paul Goldsmith said he would be freed by the end of this year.
It has also given rise to the fact of sporadic violence within our legal process and shown that it was part of a lived reality in parts of our society where people were fragile. Their community demands justice for the loss of Nganeko as they grieve for her and band together to make sure no one has to experience what they lived through.
